Access type
Public state-park trail. No reservation or hiking permit is published for the self-guided Red Trail. A Georgia State Parks ParkPass is required for each vehicle. Entry inside the mill ruins is separate and currently limited to guided hikes, school groups and events.
Check-in or trailhead
1750 Mount Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA 30122
Begin at the park trailhead and follow the red blazes. The official description reaches the exterior of the New Manchester Mill ruins after approximately 0.5 mile, then continues another approximately 0.5 mile downstream to Sweetwater Falls before returning the same way.
Season & current access
The park presents the Red Trail as a public trail rather than a seasonal guided activity. Weather, high water, maintenance, special events or land-manager notices can still change access; check the park page on the travel date.
Age, skill & route requirements
The official trail page rates the route easy to difficult. The first approximately 0.5 mile reaches the mill exterior; the next half-mile toward the falls is significantly more strenuous over rocky terrain. Wear trail footwear, stay outside the closed ruin interior and turn around at the mill if the harder section does not suit the group.
1 mile one way, with an official estimate of 1–2 hours each way and an easy-to-difficult rating. A mill-only out-and-back is shorter; continuing to the falls creates an approximately 2-mile round trip with the more strenuous rocky section included.
Fit it into a wine weekend
Hike in the morning, then cool down, hydrate and eat before driving toward a West Georgia winery. Do not schedule the strenuous downstream section after tastings, and keep a shorter mill turn-around available for the group.
